This design project actually started from a small moment in my daily life. Recently, I bought some molds online to make mooncakes for my dogs. Over the years, they’ve become a source of emotional support for me. I realized that the process of preparing food for them gave me a sense of peace, almost like caring for family. That’s when the idea struck me: why not create a dedicated set of molds and bowls to prepare food with even more thought and care? So I designed a set of mooncake and biscuit moulds with handprints of my two dogs to make food for them during the festive season so that they can be a part of the important festivities.

Final work

This piece captures the bond between humans and animals through imprints, combining traditional craftsmanship with digital fabrication.

Small roller

I decided to incorporate a deeply personal and meaningful element into the design of my dog mooncake molds: the paw prints of my own dogs. The paw prints symbolize not only the bond between me and my pets but also the unique presence they have in my life. By using their paw prints as part of the pattern design, I was able to create a fusion of personal connection and cultural tradition, making the mooncakes even more special and meaningful.

This piece explores the connection between humans and animals through tactile imprints and craftsmanship. Using a combination of traditional woodworking and digital fabrication, I have created a rolling device that embodies both personal and shared imprints.

The process began with molding a dog’s paw print, which was 3D scanned and digitally modeled into the desired form. A 3D-printed prototype was then used to create a silicone mold, forming the rolling drum. For the handle, I shaped my own fingerprints in clay, scanned them, and used CNC machining to carve the final form from huanghuali wood. The metal components were turned on a lathe, and a spring mechanism was integrated to connect the rolling drum and handle.

Through the imprints of two dogs and my own hands, this work symbolizes the intimate, physical bond between humans and animals, preserved through both digital and handmade processes.

Big roller

Similar to the Small Roller, this piece explores the bond between humans and animals through imprints, combining traditional craftsmanship with digital fabrication. The Big Roller, with smaller patterns, is designed for making treats for small dogs, while the Small Roller, with larger patterns, is suited for treats for large dogs. Both can also be used to imprint mooncake designs.

Mooncake Molds

This mooncake mold design is inspired by the Mid-Autumn Festival, incorporating a transformed pattern of the moon and clouds captured during the season, along with two dog paw prints. The design was 3D-printed and refined through multiple tests with mooncake dough to ensure the final pattern was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The stamp handle is ergonomically shaped based on my hand for a comfortable grip. Additionally, the back of the mold serves as a grinder for vegetable powders, providing a natural and healthy way to create food coloring. The result is a multifunctional tool that blends tradition, personal touch, and practicality.

This box stores the set with an adjustable leather handle, keeping everything secure and ready for festive use with my dog.

Festive Keeper

This box is designed to hold the entire set of products, featuring two layers, each adorned with my unique patterns. The handle is adjustable, allowing it to be carried or laid flat to open both layers. The handle also incorporates my fingerprint, which was scanned and modeled for a personal touch.

The leather was shaped separately using a 3D-printed model as a template. The leather was wet-molded over the model and allowed to dry before being removed and stitched onto the wooden handle. This process ensures a secure and durable connection between the handle and the box.

Each product is individually scanned to determine the ideal depth and groove placement, ensuring a snug fit and preventing movement while stored. The box is designed to be dust-proof and breathable, making it perfect for storage when not in use. During special occasions, such as holidays, it can be brought out to celebrate with my dog, sharing the festive atmosphere together. This thoughtful design combines functionality, personal craftsmanship, and seasonal joy.
