Summary

Final work

College School of Pre-Degree Studies

Course UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Graduation year 2025

Scale : 1:100 mm

Medium: Plastic sheet, mirror sheet, synthetic grass, acrylic paint, markers

This project is a thoughtfully designed retreat that brings together nature-inspired ideas with modern architecture and a touch of biomimicry. Drawing from the organic forms of tree trunks, the structure integrates natural patterns with modern design elements to create a restorative haven amid urban life. Its purpose is to provide a space dedicated to yoga, healing, and mental clarity, supporting a balanced lifestyle that harmonizes work, school, and nature. Key design features include wave-like forms that symbolize climate consciousness while offering psychological comfort, and transparent surfaces that reflect and amplify nature. The center houses areas for yoga, mindfulness, and community well-being, making it a holistic space for renewal.

Research and process

The American Nature Exhibition, Mitch Epstein, Turin-Italy (17 October 2024 -2 March 2025

The microscope view of trees allowed me to see nature from an entirely new perspective, revealing the intricate and complex structures that are often hidden from the naked eye. I uncovered the remarkable significance of examining nature within a more structured, scientific environment, especially in laboratories. I discovered that the complex characteristics found in tree bark not only signify the life and climate conditions a tree experiences but also function as a natural archive showcasing the quality and span of life provided by the environment. Considering these meanings, I determined the main design pattern from a biomimicry perspective.

The Linocut Technique Texture and Color Exploration

As part of a material and concept study, I experimented with the linocut technique by carving tree bark-inspired patterns into linoleum sheets of different sizes. This hands-on process helped me reflect the organic, layered quality of natural forms through texture.

I applied paint using a sliding sponge brush and tested the prints on various surfaces such as paper and acetate. These experiments allowed me to analyze how different materials and colors influenced the emotional and visual impact of the pattern.

The carved linoleum created a strong sensory expression, evoking the feeling of being inside a tree trunk. This technique helped me define which bark forms and tones best supported the healing, nature-connected atmosphere I aimed to bring into my design.
