Taking inspiration from Essence magazine, a prominent black magazine which started in 1970 by Ida Elizabeth Lewis who was also editor and chief, its focus is on black womanhood and showing black women (particularly black African American women) in a joyful and upstanding way. Essence of couture is three portraits taking inspiration from the covers of the magazine.

Like Simone
Like Simone is a piece inspired by Nina Simone she was frequently interviewed and referenced over the magazine's history. The piece uses black silk and her iconic side profile the model poses with dignity and has black lace spiral lace to reflect Nina’s legacy

Touched by Reathers,
Touched by feathers references Josephine Baker’s iconic feather show girl gowns although done in a more modern style. The piece evokes a sense of style and poise often not appreciated in black women. As essence was often portrayed as stylish, poised and elegant, the piece tries to reflect this legacy.

Satin
This piece takes a look at Essences magazine headshots and tries to recreate the glamour. The model sits refined and posed and looks to the audience in order to say I am here, and I am beautiful which is what the piece tries to resonate with the audience.
