Using the Chinese fish lantern as its central symbol, "A Wish, A Weight" explores tensions between traditional culture and individual identity. In Chinese culture, especially during Chinese New Year, fish lanterns symbolize good fortune, health, and family unity. Yet these positive meanings often accompany societal expectations related to education, career success, marriage, and adherence to traditions, placing pressure on younger generations who feel torn between tradition and personal freedom. This project combines traditional Chinese art with modern illustration techniques—including digital painting, traditional painting, 3D modeling—to visually express this delicate balance between blessing and burden, promoting reflection on personal experiences and intergenerational understanding.
