# Project Description See You Next Time Yusen Hu Summary Final work College Camberwell College of Arts Course MA Designer Maker Graduation year 2024 As a skateboarder and designer, I’ve learned that friendships, like skateboarding, often evolve over time. While some friends drift away or stop skating, reconnecting with them reminds me that true bonds can endure beyond shared activities. Inspired by this idea, I repurpose old skateboard parts into furniture, drawing from skaters’ everyday routines. Just as these pieces gain a new purpose, friendships can find new meaning and life even as our paths change. Through my designs, I celebrate the resilience of connection—proving that meaningful relationships can last, even as life shifts and moves us in different directions. Final work The inspiration for this design comes from the trainers often seen hanging from poles or trees near skateparks. Skaters throw their worn-out shoes up there purely for fun. Decks chair Skateboard decks are consumables, often leaving skaters with piles of them at home. However, these decks hold sentimental value, symbolising the progress and memories of a skater's journey. This inspired Yusen to design a chair that not only stores skateboards but also extends their lifecycle by repurposing them, reflecting the theme of sustainability. This work incorporates surplus materials from Solid Floor, combining solid wood and plywood in a unique way. The wood blocks are meticulously arranged to showcase the distinct textures of the materials, further enhanced through specialised finishing techniques. The chair features a slot wide enough to accommodate multiple layers of skateboards, with the natural shape of the decks and their grip tape securely anchoring them in place. Emotion Breaker stool The broken boards often result from skaters either celebrating the joy of landing a great trick or expressing frustration after failing a trick they’ve been working on for a long time. This is a form of emotional release, with the act of breaking a board embodying a raw and powerful expression of feeling. To capture this, Yusen incorporated the imagery of a broken deck into the bottom of the stool, allowing people to see and experience this emotion in a direct and tangible way. Reverse Grind table Skaters perform various tricks on ledges, each with its own name, such as the Smith Grind or Feeble Grind. Skaters constantly push their creativity, inventing new tricks. Inspired by this, Yusen reimagined one of these tricks by flipping it upside down, as if creating an entirely new trick. This concept is embodied in the table, aptly named Reverse Grind. Ledges at skate parks are often made of cement or marble, so the table top is made of marble.
