Exploring "Potty Parity" through Data Visualization — Using the "Urinary Leash" as a Metaphor to Reveal the Challenges Women face in Consistently Accessing Toilet Facilities in Public Spaces

The project merges data research with installation design to address the issues of women's queuing and unequal resource distribution in public toilets. Utilizing data visualization, it employs the "urinary leash" concept to create an installation that personalizes the queuing experience, contrasts women's and men's toilet conditions, and fosters audience empathy.

The term "urinary leash" metaphorically represents a restraint confining women to their homes, implying their mobility and outside stay were strictly limited by urination intervals. From the UK's Victorian era to the 21st - century global context, the “urinary leash” connotation has broadened to represent toilet - related predicaments women faced globally throughout history due to neglected requirements.

It highlights women's overlooked needs, triggers public discourse, and encourages the reevaluation of policies. Furthermore, it prompts urban planners and designers to reconsider toilet facilities through a gender-equitable lens, aiming for "potty parity" to enhance women's comfort and dignity in public spaces.
