"Ways of Life" began as an exploration into ancient Chinese philosophy, ending with a particular focus on Xunzi’s teachings, which I chose to interpret as a costume. Inspired by his belief improving through deliberate and consistent effort, I worked exclusively with calico and hessian, using techniques such as quilting, embroidery, and pyrography to transform them—demonstrating how even the simplest of fabrics can be elevated through persistent care and effort. This approach also reflects the idea that classical philosophical texts, much like these materials, serve as a foundation open to reinterpretation.

Final work

  • Final outcome images of my costume
  • Final outcome images of my costume, back view
  • Final outcome images of my costume, front view
  • Close up shots of my garment - the sleeves which are decorated with pyrography
  • Close up shots of my garment - the front piece which is quilted
  • Close up shots of my garment - the skirt which uses pleats
  • Close up shots of my garment - the skirt, mostly done by quilting
