Hi, Yiming here!

Hi, Yiming here!

College Camberwell College of Arts

Course MA Fine Art: Painting

Graduation year 2024

My research is about the re-presentation of the female figure in the coastal areas of China. Through my paintings, I hope to reflect on and study the neglected labour of marginalised women in the coastal areas and their dilemmas.

Final work

Past Life

This part consists of nine shoes, which were made by my grandmother and I. These shoes were made for newborn babies around three months old in our region, and boys wore shoes with a tiger's head, while girls wore shoes with a pig's head. These shoes mean that small children can grow up healthily. In my grandmother's past life she raised three sons, but the first time she made these shoes was for her half-brother when she was about 12 years old. She made these shoes for many people in her life, her siblings, her children, her children's children... In my opinion, each pair of shoes is a member of the family, and these shoes are also my grandmother's flesh and blood, she created this family.

The hostess

These ceramics in this part is related to the painting, I was going to mount these ceramics on the painting but I realised it would be better to place them separately.

These ceramics were broken, and in the process of repairing them, I realised that they represent the process of women in a family trying to repair the relationship between the families. Just like the fisherwomen on the beach whose daily work is to repair the nets, they are also repairing and running a family.

Both of these works are trying to show the unnoticed contribution of women in family life.

Calm Eyes

I put this painting on the floor. I discovered this method at the millbank exhibition, and in this exhibition I put this idea into practice. I have always wanted to create a separate space in the picture and I think this is a very good way to convert a 2D picture into 3D. This painting was made after I thought about illness and death. It is in memory of my grandmother, who died the night I arrived in the UK and who inspired the subject matter and research of my paintings, she raised me and was a very important person to me. I have put her image on the canvas. This painting is linked to the first work.
