# Project Description Uncover the Front Xue (Roy) Summary Final work College Camberwell College of Arts Course MA Illustration Graduation year 2025 The theme of this project is "Challenging the Male Gaze in Pornography." It comprises a virtual website and a sticker workshop. In this fictional website, viewers are offered a simulated experience of logging into a pornography site. The website is divided into three sections: male-oriented, female-oriented, and non-binary explorations. In this section, I created misleading silhouettes based on typical compositions seen on mainstream pornographic websites. When viewers click on these thumbnails, they find the actual content is entirely opposite to their expectations—what appears to feature women actually showcases men. This part aims to critique the dominance of the male gaze in mainstream pornography. By subverting stereotypical expectations, it seeks to evoke humor or discomfort, highlighting female users' dissatisfaction with the male-centric gaze. Here, you can explore the visual language of the female gaze. These compositions are inspired by my preliminary research for this project. I gathered feedback through a survey of over 60 female users, asking them about their favorite pornographic visual languages. A selection of their responses was translated into illustrated scenes. This part presents questions and ideas from interviewees about what an equitable pornographic website could look like. Due to space constraints, I created fewer illustrations for this section. However, I prepared a sticker workshop alongside it. At the venue, I provided stickers and question cards, along with a graffiti wall where viewers could leave their thoughts and impressions. The project originated from female users' dissatisfaction with existing pornographic websites. However, as my research deepened, I uncovered broader possibilities and issues related to this theme. Female users shared numerous ideas for constructing female-oriented pornographic platforms, while some argued that a truly equal and universally accommodating pornographic site might not even exist. From theoretical readings, I learned that pornography functions as a machine that constructs and reconstructs narratives. Although it is not a formal form of sex education, it plays an educational role. The stereotypes perpetuated by pornography profoundly influence viewers’ attitudes toward sex and their real-life sexual experiences. These are issues worth exploring and discussing.
