Memoria Divisa

Vittoria Benigno

Summary

Final work

I’m Vittoria Benigno, a visual storyteller and researcher with a deep interest in media, memory, and the politics of representation. My work explores how narratives are constructed, contested, and preserved, particularly in moments of social unrest and political conflict.

My approach blends critical theory with creative practice. I often work across documentary, experimental film, and archival media to create multi-layered narratives that question dominant perspectives. I’m particularly drawn to underrepresented voices and alternative forms of journalism, aiming to challenge the boundaries between fact and interpretation, history and memory.

For me, storytelling is a form of resistance, an opportunity to amplify the voices that history often overlooks, and to explore how media can be used not just to inform, but to empower and provoke reflection.

Memoria Divisa is a hybrid documentary film and academic research project that explores the role of citizen journalism during the 2001 Genoa G8 Summit. Combining archival footage, impressionistic storytelling, and contemporary visuals, the film challenges dominant narratives constructed by mainstream media and state institutions.

The accompanying dissertation critically examines how platforms like Indymedia empowered independent voices to document state violence, reshape collective memory, and counteract political censorship during one of Italy’s most turbulent modern protests. Through a multidisciplinary lens, drawing on media theory, memory studies, and visual culture. The project interrogates the ethics of representation, the power of grassroots journalism, and the contested legacy of the Genoa G8.

Visually fragmented and emotionally evocative, Memoria Divisa blends experimental aesthetics with documentary realism to question how truth is constructed, remembered, and mediated. The work invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of memory, the politics of visibility, and the enduring relevance of citizen journalism in today’s media landscape.
