# Project Description The Whisper Project Tongjun Xu Summary Final work I am a Chinese artist currently based in London, working at the intersection of politics, collective human consciousness, and the conflicts between humanity and nature. My practice explores how ideological structures shape perception and behaviour, often through interactive installations that invite audiences to engage directly with historical and contemporary narratives. By creating participatory experiences, I seek to expose the mechanisms of ideological control and encourage reflection on the forces that shape our collective reality I am a Chinese artist currently based in London, working at the intersection of politics, collect... College Camberwell College of Arts Course BA (Hons) Fine Art: Sculpture Graduation year 2025 My latest work "The Whisper Project" is a mixed-media installation that probes the fragility of perception and the manipulative nature of contemporary media. Comprising three components, the work invites viewers to confront their assumptions, biases, and indifference toward global crises. The first part features five AI-generated portraits of fictional political and military figures, hung solemnly on the wall. These invented visages, devoid of real-world ties, evoke curiosity and speculation, mirroring the viewer's tendency to impose narratives onto ambiguous imagery. The second component presents twelve black-and-white AI-generated images, framed in frosted acrylic. Derived from texts and poems by myself and volunteers from diverse cultural backgrounds, these images visualize imagined scenes of disaster, war, and unrest. The physical blur of the frames obscures imperfections, lending an unsettling authenticity to the artificial visuals, challenging the viewer’s perception of truth. The third element is an audio track played through speakers, a chaotic blend of speeches, news reports, and wartime recordings collected from volunteers’ cultural contexts. Mixed into white noise, the audio becomes indistinguishable yet evokes unease, subtly linking to the visuals while remaining disconnected. "The Whisper Project" seeks to expose the mechanisms of contemporary media, which exploit crises and tragedies to capture attention, reducing profound human suffering to consumable stories. It critiques the apathy of those in peaceful regions who engage with distant disasters as mere spectacles, driven by pity rather than a genuine pursuit of understanding. The title, "The Whisper Project," refers to the subtle, insidious ways in which fragmented information—whispers of truth, rumor, or propaganda—shapes our cognition, erodes our curiosity, and dulls our desire to seek deeper truths, it is a call to reclaim agency over our understanding of the world, urging a more critical and empathetic engagement with the stories that surround us.
