Course MA Design for Data Visualisation

The project aims to guide children in overcoming factors that hinder language acquisition (such as high learning costs, negative associations with language use scenarios, and mother tongue shame) through child-friendly storytelling. It facilitates language learning within the context of local culture and customs. The final outcome is the “Language Treasure Chest” – a set of children's language learning materials delivered through a “treasure hunt” narrative.

Topolecture's Treasure Box

This is a treasure chest containing a series of Topolect (Fangyan) exploration materials, documenting native language memories and data concerning the Chinese city of Suzhou. The materials include: pop-up books, linguistic maps, vocabulary cards, educational game applications, and language proficiency guides.

Pop-up Book Inside Pages

This section comprises the inner pages of the pop-up book, featuring four distinct folding techniques: forward-tilting, backward-tilting, overhead-view large-scale illustrations, and overhead-view window-style illustrations. It primarily narrates everyday tales unfolding across four Suzhou districts: Suzhou Park, the Humble Administrator's Garden, Shiquan Street, and Suzhou Centre. Each story is accompanied by narration in the local dialect, aiding audiences in understanding the cultural context and appreciating the charm of the regional vernacular.

This page from the pop-up book recounts an amusing incident witnessed by the author at Suzhou Park's children's playground. A young child, deemed too short for the pirate ship ride, threw a tantrum with his mother, who eventually won him over with an ice cream. The page includes an audio story narrated in Suzhou dialect.

Language Learning APP

This language learning application currently features Suzhou dialect, with support for both English and Chinese interfaces. The app offers multiple functionalities including level-based language learning games, visualised learning data reports and a creative platform, alongside language exchange and interactive platforms. It assists children in consolidating their language acquisition through a process of “observing data – exploring data – creating visualisations”.

Language Data Visualisation Guide

These four newspapers respectively present the ‘World's Endangered Languages and Chinese Dialects Map’, ‘Suzhou Data Story Map’, ‘Visualisation of Suzhou Dialect Speakers' Native Language Proficiency’, and ‘APP Usage Process Guide’. They aim to introduce audiences to foundational concepts such as ‘endangered languages’, ‘topolects and dialects’, and ‘data visualisation’, while enriching the narrative with robust data support.
