Worthless to Priceless

Ted Guimaraes-Clark

What defines something as having value? Investigating different cultural perspectives such as the Aztec practice of prizing chocolate above gold and influenced by artists such as Emily Frances Barrett, I have taken materials, often discarded as worthless and turned them into precious keepsakes.

By setting chewed gum in resin I have preserved both the DNA of an individual and the unique form created by their dental impressions. The fossilized gum takes on the appearance of semi precious stones and by combining these with hand crafted brass fittings, I have created a series of tongue in cheek ear pieces that combine humour with luxury.
