I am an industrial designer expanding into the material research world on a journey of making a greater positive impact with my creations. I have always explored making and building with everything that I can find around me, creating for the very personal experiences that we have in our lives. I am an explorer, always open to learning and experiencing more of the world around me.

When not making or reading, you'll find me in some sort of sports that keeps me mentally and physically active.

Snow Seeds are stickers that make snow. These stickers use ground-based cloud seeding technology to create a surface finish that empowers athletes, locals and visitors in mountain locations for glacier protection and to regenerate snowfall.

Snow Seeds harnesses the progress that has been made in cloud seeding technology over the decades to create a solution that can be used directly by the mountain and snow sports communities, without high systemic and resource costs. Multiple research studies have led to developments in ground-based cloud seeding systems that work on glaciogenic seeding of cold-season orographic clouds, and are a verifiable way forward.

In cold regions, with temperatures between −20° and 0°C, clouds contain liquid droplets in a supercooled state. When these droplets come into contact with ice, they freeze instantly. The concentration of supercooled liquid is high in clouds above −40°C, since this liquid needs contact with an aerosol particle with crystalline structures similar to ice to cause it to nucleate and form crystals. Snow Seeds creates a local environmental change that generates the presence of more nucleating media by suspending mineral salts in a modified printing media. This dissolves and deposits the salts onto the top layer of snow, from where they can evaporate upwards into cold weather clouds.

Stickers that make snow

The possibility of applying geo-engineering strategies of ground-based intentional cloud seeding to generate localised snowfall has been explored in different forms. The project proposes the inclusion of precipitation nucleating media into surface finishes that can be applied to products and gear that are part of snowboarding and skiing.

The surface finish is prepared in a specific way so that the nucleating media is suspended in a substrate till it can introduced into the cloud, where it can enhance precipitation in the form of snowfall in the local area. The method of this introduction is the process of the print ink dissolving into the top layer of snow, from where the nucleating media evaporates upwards with the top exposed layer of snow into the clouds, to create heavy precipitation particles.

The project is creating a solution that can be used by the community to not only protect their environments but regenerate them to their healthy states.

Being able to tap into community solutions gives people the power to create positive change from their favourite activities. Historically, a lot of people have spent their time in the mountains, exploring and developing sports like skiing and snowboarding. The development of these sports meant an increase in tourism in many high-altitude locations globally, notably across the Alps, the Rockies and the Himalayas, further leading to massive development projects to support the visitors. This was directly connected to the growth of economic activities in these areas, and the current populations are now heavily linked with the tourism industry.

We cannot completely shut down tourism and related activities without taking into account the greater effects that that would have on communities connected to them. What we can do, however, is empower these communities to take steps that create a positive impact from their activities

As the inks wash away, the graphics on the stickers showcase their own story. They leave their mark on the mountains, and the mountains transform them into another version of themselves. Any person who has spent time int the mountains can attest to their majestic nature and the way they influence people around them.

The stickers become a talking point, a way of showing that you as an athlete are taking the steps to increase your positive impact on the world, and rethinking your activities.
