The Archaeological Practice of Everyday Objects

Szu-Niang Tseng

Summary

Final work

With over a decade of experience in architecture and interior design, my creative approach was expanded through my studies at UAL. Ceramics has grown from a personal passion to a potential second career, reflected in my interdisciplinary MA projects. These works bridge design and ceramics, exploring innovative possibilities and connecting diverse fields to create meaningful outcomes.

This project explores the intersection of history, archaeology, and the environment through ceramics and everyday objects, emphasizing their cultural and ecological significance. Through experiments like Mudlarking, Mapping, and creating Clay Vessels, it uncovers traces of human activity, fosters reflection on local geology, history, and sustainability, and promotes eco-conscious practices.

Project Index

The poster presents the content of this project through various experiments. The first part is the critical research paper, which serves as a guide to exploring local historical treasures. The second part is a portfolio, conceived as a catalogue, functioning as a descriptive and interpretive tool. It documents, analyzes, and contextualizes the experimental process through specific lenses: historical context, eco-conscious perspectives of the Anthropocene, local archaeological excavations, and embodied memory within ceramic works. Finally, the clay vessels represent the physical practice, integrating all the main themes of this project, including archaeology, geography, geology, and materiality.
