Succulent and Full of Flavour

Sophia Hogg

Summary

Final work

Sophia Hogg is a Scottish textile designer based in London. Her love for everything edible originates from her half American-Jewish half Scottish heritage and the foods she grew up around. Led by process, colour and good humour, Sophia's goal is to keep her practice playful, colourful and never dull.

‘Succulent and Full of Flavour’ intends to highlight the value, joy and sense of community found through enjoying food. The project aims to give a pedestal to the overlooked beauty in simplicity and relish in the nostalgia of the comfort foods I grew up with. This project was very process led, starting with photography and object scans which led to large scale paperwork and collage and eventually developing into fabric prints.

After some unfulfilling and overly serious fashion industry internships, I discovered the value in my community at my part time hospitality job. My goal was to give a sense of playful yet luxuriousness to these most valuable associations of mine to food, friends and love I have found outside of the challenging and ever changing fashion industry. The collection features acid dye screen printed silk scarves, large scale pigment printed digital prints and a series of repeat prints on a mix of silks, cottons and blends.

'Value' has become an important word for this project, leaning into the fact that the cheapest food outlets often provide us with the most valuable moments. To me, the biggest luxuries are the drunken visits to the kebab shop for a battered sausage, the lunch time portion of chips on the beach or the late night sandwich on thick white bread, which is what this project intends to illustrate. Enjoy!
