Ripple Tableware: Subtle Design for Mindful Eating

Shuyu Lu

Summary

Final work

I’m Shuyu Lu, a designer currently based in London. I completed my undergraduate degree in Interaction Design at UAL’s London College of Communication, and I am now pursuing my MA in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins. At the heart of my practice lies an enduring interest in emotional design—because I believe that meaningful design doesn’t just solve problems, it resonates, lingers, and quietly connects us to each other and to ourselves.

To me, if we truly want a better future, we shouldn't wait for it—we must design it. My personal motto is to remain both curious and skeptical about the future. I believe it’s not the experiences themselves that shape us, but the memories we choose to keep, and how we use them to question, reflect, and imagine what’s ahead.

Inspiration, I believe, always favours those who are willing to observe and live attentively. I draw from life not to capture what’s fleeting, but to trace what’s meaningful. With each project, I try to create designs that don’t shout, but whisper—inviting pause, feeling, and dialogue. I hope to craft tools, experiences, and moments that gently shape a more caring and intentional world.

Ripple is a sensory tableware collection designed to encourage slower, more conscious eating in everyday life. In a culture of speed and excess, Ripple offers a quiet counter-rhythm—a way to return to the body’s natural signals and reframe mealtime as a moment of balance and care.

Rather than use data, alarms, or restriction, Ripple works through tactile patterning, material warmth, and spatial cues. Each piece—spoon, chopsticks, bowl, plate—is crafted using traditional Chinese techniques: hand-carved walnut, wood-fired porcelain, and twisted clay. Together, they shape a dining experience where “less” happens gently, and “full” is felt, not measured.

Ripple is not a medical tool. It is a companion in cultivating healthier habits—whether you're seeking mindful nourishment, preventing overeating, or simply appreciating the poetry of slower living.
