Within my project I wanted to find a way to bring together some of the different themes that I had been interested in throughout the course so far. I enjoy working with figurative painting to explore conversations surrounding culture, history and the relationship between reality and fantasy. I wanted to integrate symbolism, surrealism, and magical realism to create a dream like reality, while drawing influence from family anecdotes as well as folklore and literature.

the title was inspired by a line from the poem 'la noche oscura del alma' , by san juan de la cruz.
