Personalised Denim: A Business Development Project

Sara Jordan

Summary

Final work

Hi! My name is Sara Jordan and I am a recent graduate from the London College of Fashion where I studied Fashion Buying and Merchandising. Throughout my final year at LCF I completed my Final Major Project which was a Business Development Project for the brand Cheap Monday. I thoroughly enjoyed my time developing this range plan for the brand and learned a lot about myself as a buyer and merchandiser. I’ve discovered I am a highly analytical person dedicated to extensive research and justification when planning ranges. I enjoy bringing new technological ideas to high street fashion brands and pushing the boundaries of the responsibility brands have to create a sustainable and responsible experience for their customers. I feel this is well displayed in my brief glimpse into my Final Major Project.

Course BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising

Graduation year 2025

As part of my final year at London College of Fashion studying Fashion Buying and Merchandising, I developed a comprehensive Business Development Project titled Personalised Denim: A Business Development Proposal for Cheap Monday . This project included an in-depth range plan informed by extensive market research, competitive shop reports, and both primary and secondary research. With additional sections covering costings, supply chain logistics, marketing strategy, and visual merchandising.

The project centred on introducing a personalised embroidery service, allowing customers to co-create their own pair of Cheap Monday jeans by adding unique embroidery design, a strategy aimed at enhancing brand engagement and individuality. To support this service launch, both S/S 26 and A/W 26 denim ranges were designed tailored to forecasted trends within the resurging indie sleaze market and the projected trajectory of the recently relaunched Cheap Monday brand.

Key Frameworks

Here is a brief look into some of the secondary and primary research completed for this project. Two key frameworks, SWOT and PESTLE, have been displayed to demonstrate the extensive research gone into planning this range for Cheap Monday. A comprehensive look at the external and internal market was taken in order to create a cohesive and timely range set up for success within the ever changing and tumultuous fashion market.

The final range plans for both the S/S 26 and A/W 26 launches for Cheap Monday including the embroidery options for the proposed embroidery service. These drops were informed by trend research, current brand offering, and primary research with a focus group.

The primary research completed for this project included a comp shop of five of Cheap Monday’s competitors, a survey of over 100 18-25 year olds living in the UK, a focus group of 4 21-22 year old female UK shoppers, and interview with two Cheap Monday industry professionals. The image displayed contains the results and analysis of both the survey and comp shop that helped inform the rest of the project’s decisions.

This image highlights a substantial portion of the merchandising strategy developed for the project. A detailed line analysis is included to justify key decisions regarding pricing, margin targets, rate of sale (ROS), and unit buy, ensuring the range is both commercially viable and aligned with projected consumer demand.

Also featured is a fully built WSSI plan, complete with justifications for intake volumes, stock cover, and markdown strategy. A sales phasing breakdown supports accurate forecasting and aligns intake timing with expected peaks in demand.

Finally, a proposed supply chain critical path is outlined, accounting for predicted production lead times and shipping durations, helping ensure that product delivery is feasible and aligned with the commercial calendar.
