Once Upon a Time...

Sally Yu

Hi, I'm sally, a graduate of the CSM FAD Jewellery and Accessories pathway. My work is often medium and materials-based, working with mixed media to investigate the contrast between the natural and unnatural world. I enjoy combining unusual textures within the context of adorning the body, using my personal experience to convey and challenge conventional understanding. My interests also lie with explorations of colour and themes of culture and social norms.

Once Upon a Time...

‘Once Upon a Time’ is a project that aims to explore the connection between community, culture, and narratives through the use of legends and folklore.

Exploring the evolution of stories, I further used inspiration from traditional Asian hairpins to investigate a darker depiction of the spider in contrast to opposing presentations in other traditions.

Based on the Japanese stories of the Jorogumo, this piece, made with Brass and cotton thread, was designed using ideas surrounding the seductive and manipulative nature of the creature, serving as a decoration that keeps count of victims, using the beads to symbolize each of the humans woven into its trap.

Final work

A focused frame of a long crocheted red train of fabric created as an attachement on a hair accessory. Hanging from it are deep red beads.
A focused image of the golden hair comb, formed to represent the shape of spider's web, sitting in a hair bun.
Inspired by Legends of the Jorogumo from Japanese folklore, a long red fabric, with suspended beads, hangs from a golden web-like comb.

Research and process

A page collaged with research inspiration, ranging from designers like Iris Van Herpen to sculptors like Louise Bourgeois.
An exploration of potential designs, using itterative sketches and drawings of forms in the hair.
