# Project Description Oleogels for Afro-Textured Hair Ronica Jumi-Gordon Summary Final work Ronica is a cosmetic scientist (MSc Cosmetic Science, London College of Fashion) whose master's project, titled 'Oleogels for Afro-Textured Hair', focused on developing structured oil-based formulations using ethyl cellulose to improve the application, manageability, and moisture retention of Afro-textured hair while reducing stiffness, friction, and breakage. College London College of Fashion Course MSc (Hons) Cosmetic Science Graduation year 2025 Textured hair, which is most frequently linked to people of African heritage, includes a broad range of curl patterns, such as coils, kinks, and waves. Even though the industry has become more inclusive, Type 4 hair which the Andre Walker Hair Typing System defines as the most coily and fragile continues to be under-represented. This gap is caused by a lack of a reliable classification system, validated testing procedures appropriate for this hair type, and a limited scientific understanding of the biology of textured hair. This project explores how science can address the real-world beauty issue of Afro-textured hair care. This hair type, which is renowned for its beautiful coils and curls, is more susceptible to dryness, breakage, and tangling due to its natural structure. Using materials science, I developed a range of semi-solid oil gels, or oleogels, that contain natural oils like castor, jojoba, argan, and coconut and are structured with the plant-based polymer ethyl cellulose. These gels offer a cleaner, non-greasy way to moisturise and style hair by making the oils easier to apply and more effective at reducing friction, stiffness, and breakage. The study bridges the gap between cosmetic science and real-world hair needs by combining texture analysis, hair testing, and beauty formulation to show how oleogels can be a next-generation curl care solution. The project responds to a growing consumer demand for high-performing, inclusive, scientifically backed products for textured hair.
