“The Textures Between Us"

Robyn Barnes

Profile picture of Robyn Barnes

Robyn is a textile artist whose creative journey is sparked by bold colour combinations, rich textures, and playful structures. She thrives on merging contrasting inspirations, often weaving political themes into her work to provoke thought and reflection. Her process begins with energetic mark-making and experimental research, embracing mixed media, bold patterns, and shape to build her conceptual vision.

Robyn's designs are rooted in craftsmanship, using self-taught skills like Passementerie, macramé, needle felting, and cord-making, which she integrates into her knitting in unconventional ways. She enjoys reviving and evolving archetypal knitting techniques by combining elements of contemporary crafts, aiming to contribute to the evolution of knitwear within the fashion industry.

Educated at Central Saint Martins and Kingston School of Art, she embraces collaboration and open-ended methodologies while maintaining a sustainable, tactile approach, reusing materials, exploring natural dyes, and prioritising a zero-waste mindset.

This textile collection is a tribute to my childhood au pair, Vivienne, and a heartfelt homage to Prague, her homeland and a city imbued with memory and meaning. Inspired by a personal journey, I drew from Prague’s intricate architecture and surfaces, particularly the rhythmic repetition of brickwork. These structures symbolise strength, connection, and the idea of home. The designs merge visual textures from terracotta rooftops and patterns found in a Czech cookery book. Through tactile knit experimentation, the project weaves together memory, place, and personal connection, turning the material into a soft, wearable story of belonging.
