An Introduction to the Project
My research investigates the challenges and opportunities of introducing Digital Product Passports within South Asia’s informal handmade rug and carpet clusters, with the goal of generating culturally and economically sensitive pathways for sustainable trade under evolving EU regulations.

The Research Objectives
The goal was to explore how Digital Product Passports can be understood, evaluated, and adapted for South Asia’s handmade rug and carpet sector by reviewing literature, examining stakeholder perspectives, analysing barriers and enablers, and proposing actionable pathways for culturally and economically sensitive adoption.

The Findings
The research findings reveal intertwined challenges of compliance, artisan welfare, technological barriers, and governance in enabling sustainable DPP adoption in South Asia’s handmade rug sector.

A Conclusion
Sensitively adapted Digital Product Passports can align sustainability, transparency, and EU compliance with the preservation of South Asia’s handmade rug heritage, offering actionable pathways for inclusive and sustainable digitalization despite existing barriers.
