Scenes From an Invisible Mountain

Richard Hansard

Summary

Final work

I am an Irish artist based in Shanghai, China. My work explores memory, place, and emotion to create living inner landscapes. Inspired by cycling journeys across continents, I collect materials like water, sand, and foliage from these locations and incorporate them into my art. This process bridges physical and emotional landscapes, reflecting personal experiences and the invisible aspects of memory.

Scenes for an Invisible Landscape is an ongoing series that explores the connection between external physical journeys and the inner landscapes they reveal. Through my travels across diverse terrains, I collect materials such as water, sand, and foliage, alongside notes and journal entries, which are brought back to become integral parts of the work.

These elements are used to craft layered compositions that question the relationship between the personal spaces I inhabit within myself and the physical spaces I traverse. Each piece becomes a visual and tactile reflection of the emotional and psychological resonance of these journeys, serving as a mode of self-discovery.

By embedding fragments of the external world into my art, this series seeks to blur the boundaries between outer landscapes and inner experiences, inviting viewers to consider how their own environments shape and reflect their inner worlds. Scenes for an Invisible Landscape is as much about the act of journeying as it is about the landscapes that reside within us all.

Scenes from an Invisible Mountain (Series)

This abstract mixed-media painting features an interplay of bold colours, dynamic textures, and layered elements. The composition is dominated by vibrant orange and deep indigo, creating a strong contrast that evokes both tension and harmony. The orange section, positioned near the top, appears textured and layered, suggesting an atmospheric or mountainous form. Delicate black linework overlays this section, adding detail reminiscent of map-like or architectural forms.

Softer, textured greys and whites merge with the indigo background, forming abstract shapes and ethereal transitions. Handwritten text and symbolic markings are visible, inviting a sense of narrative or personal exploration. The inclusion of these marks and the interplay of organic shapes with precise lines hint at themes of memory, mapping, and introspection. The piece feels like a visual diary—a landscape of emotions, thoughts, and physical impressions.

These works are inspired by a transformative seven-year journey climbing 13 holy mountains in China—a period marked by profound personal change and inner uncertainty as I navigated challenges with my mental health. Each piece represents a holy mountain from a different region of China, symbolising a distinct phase of my evolution and self-discovery. Every mark and colour choice is imbued with meaning, reflecting memories, people, and journal entries from those journeys. Together, these works capture fleeting moments of flux and transformation, blending the physical path with the emotional and spiritual.

Scenes from an Invisible Mountain (Series)

This work features a bold red background layered with expressive abstract elements in white, black, and yellow. Text phrases like "HERE," "Unseen," and "Communicating" punctuate the composition, enhancing its reflective and narrative qualities. The brushstrokes suggest movement and energy, while the overlay of fragmented forms and text evokes themes of connection, visibility, and introspection.

This piece features a muted orange background with a central mountain-like form in blues, purples, and whites. Delicate lines and geometric shapes intertwine with textured brushstrokes, creating a layered composition. The work includes subtle handwritten text and fragmented marks, suggesting themes of exploration, memory, and connection between natural forms and personal narratives. The contrasting elements evoke a sense of introspection and discovery.
