# Project Description Beyond Eternity Qingyang Zhang Summary Final work I am an emerging artist and designer exploring themes of infinity, cultural identity, and spiritual symbolism through handcrafted materials. My recent work focuses on traditional Chinese thread flower techniques and Tibetan mandalas, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. I draw from the concept of “Beyond Eternal” — a search for meaning beyond time, structure, and material permanence. Through intricate layering, repetitive processes, and symbolic geometry, I seek to bridge craft and philosophy, the personal and the universal. Currently based in London, I am developing a body of work that investigates the poetic intersection of heritage and abstraction. Mediums I work with include thread, wire, fabric, paper, and mixed media installation. I am an emerging artist and designer exploring themes of infinity, cultural identity, and spiritu... College London College of Fashion Course BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles: Embroidery Graduation year 2025 Brief Project Background / Inspiration Source At the end of 2024, while conceptualizing my graduation project, I traveled to Egypt-a journey that profoundly shifted my creative direction. Standing before ancient monuments and witnessing the legacy of a thousand-year-old civilization, I felt a deep sense of awe at the smallness of human life in the face of nature and time. Visiting the pyramids and museums, I was particularly struck by the ancient Egyptians’ longing for immortality and the rich symbolism embedded in their funerary culture. Later, during a family road trip through Tibet, I encountered another unique perspective on life and death. Through conversations with local villagers, I learned about the traditional practice of sky burial, where the physical body is returned to nature and the soul is believed to be reborn. It’s another kinds of way to achieve immortality. Project Goal This project aims to visually interpret and fuse symbolic elements from ancient Egyptian and Tibetan cultures—two civilizations that explore the concept of eternity in vastly different yet spiritually resonant ways. Through fashion as a medium, I seek to create a couture collection that offers a contemporary reflection on these themes, inviting viewers to rethink their relationship with time, death, and the sacred. Craft & Techniques I integrated two core techniques in this collection: Tambour embroidery, which I have been trained in, and Chinese traditional thread-wrapping (Chán Huā)—a national intangible cultural heritage craft. The incorporation of both allowed me to elevate the material quality of the garments and achieve a level of refinement aligned with the couture market. Visually, I drew from Egyptian symbols such as Ankh, the solar disk, and pharaonic motifs, blending them with Tibetan iconography like prayer wheels, vibrant sacred color palettes, and layered textile textures. Market Positioning & Reflection This collection is designed for the couture fashion market, with a strong emphasis on cultural depth and craftsmanship. Throughout the design process, I continuously reflected on how to balance respectful cultural representation with creative reinterpretation. The project became not only a technical and aesthetic endeavor but also a personal exploration of how clothing can embody spiritual narratives across civilizations.
