Take Two is a compilation of different conversations surrounding popular cinema that are focused on what it means to be a ‘queer’ spectator. Beyond notions of sexuality and gender identity, how can a spectator use ‘queerness’ as an approach to understand or challenge cinema? This project spotlights individual responses or interpretations and collates them together into a co-authored body of work.

The body of work was created through a series of discussion-centric screenings and workshops, which either focused on certain films – Joyland (2022) & Shiva Baby (2020) – or used films as thematic entrypoints into creative activities – including a series of Exquisite Corpses and a Digital Collage workshop.

Codes, Creatures & Cleanerbots

The chapter documents the creative outcomes of an Exquisite Corpse workshop, prompted by the films WALL-E (2008), Her (2013) and Poor Things (2023). Participants were asked to respond to different sketching prompts, that looked at the protagonists' archetypes as 'queer' characters.

Joyland (2022)

The chapter focuses on the film 'Joyland' and documents a conversation between two viewers as they unpack the contexts and tensions associated with the characters' world and reality.
