This art project takes the shape of a card game inspired by the Brazilian samba school parades. The work blends collage, digital illustration, and paper cutting techniques to reimagine Carnival as a strategic and interactive experience and to bring up reflexions and discussions about this cultural aspect of Brazilian black culture.

Drawing on extensive research into Afro-Brazilian heritage, the project includes a guidebook that connects each card’s imagery to real elements of a parade, such as floats, community roles, and external challenges. Through play, audiences engage with themes of collective creativity, resilience, and cultural pride.

Remainders

In 2013, Pá.ú.lú studied wire-bending techniques with Trinidadian artists Carl and Lynn Gabriel, learning how to transform wire into dynamic three-dimensional forms. This training gave rise to a series of works, including Leoa (2013).

In 2018, the artist created Rupture , a work that culminated in its own burning. By embracing destruction, the piece explored fire as both an ending and a beginning—a force of renewal as much as loss. Through this act, carnival’s exuberance was reframed as a meditation on memory, vulnerability, and survival.

Mangueira

This artwork was created using paper-cutting techniques to form delicate paper feathers. It represents groups of costumed performers in a carnival parade as seen from above. These groups, known as alas , are a defining feature of Brazilian samba school processions.

The aerial perspective echoes the way carnival is most often experienced through television broadcasts, offering a bird’s-eye view of the parades. Here, the artist reinterprets that familiar vantage point, presenting his own vision of a samba school parade.

The colours represent one of the most traditional Samba Schools in Rio de Janeiro.

The choice of green and white reflects the traditional colours often associated with Brazilian samba schools.
