A Doll Manifesto

This piece of work confronts misplaced desire. The doll acting as a bridge between the literal and the subconscious. In childhood we were able conjure alternate spaces and timelines through doll imaginings; with many using dolls as early forms of self-curation. Through this work, I invite a return to the doll as both witness and provocation. As Jacques Lacan (1901–1981) said, “man’s desire is the desire of the other” (seminar XI p.235). I believe we can interrogate this other through the uncanny gaze of the almost human, as through this confrontation we can dissect the illusions of wholeness we uphold for ourselves and others.
