I am an Interaction Design student and multidisciplinary artist based in London. College London College of Communication Course BA (Hons) Interaction Design Arts Graduation year 2023 The Hill of Crosses is a historical landmark and famous pilgrimage site in Lithuania. It is a unique and powerful monument consisting of thousands of crosses of all sizes and designs, which have been placed there by visitors over the years, and its origins date back to the 1800s as a symbol of faith, resistance, and solidarity against oppression. It also signifies the realms of ancient paganism and persistent Roman Catholicism intertwining harmoniously in the Lithuanian region of Samogitia. In the past, Samogitia was known for preserving pagan beliefs and traditions longer than other regions, even after the Christianization of Lithuania in the 14th century. Today, you can find a blend of both pagan and Catholic influences in the cultural practices, folklore, and customs of the region. This unique combination reflects the historical and cultural evolution of the area. Final work The Hill of Crosses - Film This project aims to showcase the remarkable Hill of Crosses, celebrating its rich history and profound symbolism, while drawing inspiration from my own Samogitian heritage, which I was eager to explore further after my great-grandmother’s death since she was a pillar of the Samogitian community. This project serves as a demonstration of the innate spiritual heritage of Samogitian people, encapsulating the blend of pagan and Catholic traditions that have shaped their identity. The tone on the Hill of Crosses is one of tranquillity and contemplation, inviting visitors to consider the introspective connection between the past and present, which I wanted to unveil through this film.
