Nefertiti Cheung

Named after my time spent at the geysers of Yellowstone, "Old Faithful" beckons Western and coastal imagery that sets out to build upon technical and hand-processing within the collection. This project explores a youthful American-Western narrative, from intricate lacework surface patterns to digital manipulation of embroidery practices. The key areas of research feature landscape paintings, Chinese name paintings, Nudie Cohn suits (Bizzarri, 2023), and the natural world. Moreover, illustrations and details provoke a sense of whimsy, with the final range of technical processes taking on traditional folk art and greenery through gingham-inspired bead weaving, appliqué, cutwork and laser-cutting.
