I want to celebrate linguistic diversity, growing up hearing how the Irish language is ‘a dead language’ I wanted to fight against living in a monoculture. I’ve noticed how the use of languages celebrates diversity, community and fun; I have tried to keep these values at the centre of my project throughout by interviewing my peers and linguistic experts to highlight the joy and importance of language learning. My favourite part has been creating a ‘Live Dictionary’ in which people can write and illustrate their favourite word or phrase. I want to continue adding to this, as a yearly tradition.

Final work

Monoculture, Shmonoculture!

This short film includes interviews with many of the staff and students of Lime Grove about the role language plays in their lives. The microphone, named Kiki, was designed as a mascot for the project. The spikey design was inspired by my research on the Bouba/ Kiki effect.
