My final collection is centered around the “true” story of a UFO crash in Aurora Texas. Allegedly, after an alien ship crashed into a windmill, killing the alien inside, the residents of the town decided it would be best to give the alien a christian burial and forget the incident ever happened. I want to build off of this story and imagine how the residents in the town might mutate and transform as a result of covering up this crash. Over the course of the collection, I wanted the looks to morph from relatively recognizable silhouettes into otherworldly creatures.
I chose this story because as a Texan, I have experienced this pattern of covering up and burying things that are “different”. In the end, this strategy never works and ultimately the people who are different persevere. I think this is an important story to tell now, as anti LGBT, anti women and specifically anti transgender legislation is being passed frequently in my home state.
