# Project Description

Pre-consumer denim waste

Summary

Final work

I'm a Welsh Textile designer and researcher who is committed to creating positive change through my work. My practice focuses on pre-consumer denim waste – a widespread but sometimes overlooked problem within the fashion and textile industry. Through research and experimentation, I explore how we can use waste to create something new and exciting whilst underling the damage that some global companies are responsible for.  Happily, my collaboration with Welsh denim company Hiut, has resulted in the production of multiple outcomes that could be applied to fashion, interiors or automotive.

Final work

Pre-consumer denim waste

A collection of stacked pre-consumer denim waste samples which have been sewn together using the iconic double amber stitch, frayed using an embellisher sewing machine and by manipulating the woven structure by pulling the threads out by hand.

Pre-consumer denim waste

Focusing on the iconic amber double stitch that we see on denim jeans and the beauty in different tones of the denim material.

Pre-consumer denim waste

Throughout my research and experimentation i've explored different ways in which we can manipulate denim without having a damaging effect on the environment. Denim is much beloved as it is durable and long lasting but many people instead of creating rips and colour changes on their jeans themselves through wear and tear, want to be able to purchase jeans that already have the look. The process of this can be extremely toxic to the environment so I've experimented with a range of sustainable ways in which we can do this. One of these ways is using an embellisher sewing machine, which creates lots of tiny holes in the fabric to create a worn look.

Research and process

Pre-consumer denim waste

Throughout my research on denim, the main topic that came up was the history of denim jeans and the iconic double stitch. through my project I wanted to highlight the iconic stitch with my own experimentation of using fraying techniques without using toxic processes.

Pre-consumer denim waste

The embellisher sewing machine became an important tool in my experimentation, as it was a sustainable none toxic process of manipulating and creating different effects on the denim. From this sample you can see the different texture and tones it creates without any chemicals. Also by felting the loose threads that I've taken off the side of the denim, to create a frayed look, makes the denim look aged and worn.
