College Central Saint Martins Course MA Performance: Screen Graduation year 2025 Being stuck in the past can be harmful and depressive, not because remembering or reflecting is wrong, but because living there can keep you from growing, healing, or fully experiencing the present. In some cases, depression can reduce risk-taking, but in other cases, depression can increase risk-taking. Some people experience impulsivity or emotional numbness, leading them to take risks just to feel something or break the numbness. Their ability to consider consequences becomes clouded by emotional distress, stress, or shifts in brain chemistry. A fragment of their previous selves. A “fragment” is defined as a small section, separated from the original. In this context, the title “Fragment” refers to the separation of the main character, from his past relationship. This narrative film explores the juxtaposition of an individual rationalising contemporary actions, through his former reasoning. This fragmentation in mentality and disconnection from the present, prevents Cody from moving on from his idyllic lover and fully healing. Moreover, the underlying theme of separation from the whole, is explored through Cody’s mental health, specifically his depression, which implores the character to retract from societal norms and drastically increase his appetite for risk, whilst sliding back into his amateur criminal past. This short film intends to demonstrate the negative consequences that ensue different responses to common setbacks, and how this directly impacts the path to fulfilling ones potential. The genre is love and realism is the style. Therefore, early setbacks on Cody’s journey, specifically aims to resonate with the viewer as many will have experienced similar difficulty in real life, both directly or indirectly. Furthermore, this slippery slope highlights the severe downward spiral that resides at arms-length from all of us, should we lack the resilience and mental fortitude to overcome life’s challenges.
