# Project Description

Shapes of Spontaneity

Mia Bejarin

Summary

Final work

College London College of Communication

Course MA Design for Art Direction

Graduation year 2025

Through the fusion of experimental graphic design and lyrical abstraction, Shapes of Sponteneity roots itself in instinctual making in hopes of freeing my own self from the constant hold of perfectionism. It intends to visually convey the emotional, non-linear journey I go on as an artist, using evocative colours and expressive screen-printing to reveal what it can mean to be a creative person today.

Final work

Stream

'Stream' refers to the Association phase of the creative process. I envisioned this initial stage of subconscious brainstorming as vast and tranquil, which I felt was embodied by the blue hues and oceanic brushwork. I wanted to continue the abstract, conceptual nature of the project by incorporating stitching reminiscent of book binding - a subtle, deconstructed representation of publications and editorial design.

Itch

'Itch' is a phase where I feel the urge to create, but am unsure where, when, and how to start. This intends to reflect the common experience of creatives during their struggle with starting projects, or during states of limbo. Green attempts to convey how natural and instinctive the need to create is, while the red communicates pain. Scratches in the mark-making try to emphasise this further.

Eureka

'Eureka' is the point of illumination, or when I finally find a solid idea I can build on. For me, this usually comes during quiet, unexpected moments. This intends to be communicated through the sparseness of the composition, juxtaposed against the bold vibrancy of the sunshine hues.

Stuck

'Stuck' represents the limbo phases where you feel like your going round in endless circles, in void echo-chambers of your own mind. The dark greys highlight this starkness, while the red once again conveys this sense of pain.

Illegible Type Digital Process

The project is meant to reflect, in its entirety, my personal creative process - meaning the large inclusion of digital design. While this was a more tempting tool for refining and re-doing, I ensured this process of creating illegible letterforms from painting forms was still very spontaneous.
