There is nothing you can do to appease a fascist when they believe your existence is a crime, except stop existing. Performance art film by Alli Coates & Signe Pierce The video begins in the fading glow of late afternoon, along a wide, tourist-filled street in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Vibrant signs flicker above souvenir shops, arcades, and eateries. The camera stays mostly handheld, giving the scene a raw, documentary feel. At the center of the frame walks a tall, curvy figure in a short, tight, electric-blue mini dress and towering platform heels. Her bare arms and legs are exposed under the golden sun. Her platinum-blonde hair is slick and perfectly styled—but her face is hidden completely behind a smooth, mirrored mask. The mask reflects the world around her, giving her an eerie, alien-like appearance. No mouth, no eyes—just cold glass. She walks slowly, confidently, wordlessly, attracting stares. The crowd’s reactions shift as they take her in—at first confused, then amused, then uncomfortable. Some people laugh. Others shout. Some leer, some jeer. Children ask questions. Teen boys challenge her. Adults take photos, whispering. As the minutes pass, the mood of the crowd darkens. People surround her. Tensions rise. She’s poked, taunted. One man throws an object. A woman tries to knock off her mask. People begin to touch her—without permission, without restraint. She never breaks character. Silent. Unmoving. Controlled. By the end, the crowd has turned threatening. Her stillness becomes almost sacred amid the chaos.
