Summary

Final work

I identify myself as a Ukrainian artist, and my current practice is oriented on the processing and transformation of trauma, consequences of the conflict, and reshaping of personal and shared experience against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Primarily using analogue photography and recently motion picture, I am interested in developing new approaches to the medium in order to activate different modes of perception of the semantic content of my work. In my practice, I also widely use text and sculptural elements as a self-contained unit as well as an extension of the photographic image.

“ * “ Piece is created from the perspective of the ones directly affected by the conflict (war in Ukraine), with experience from within, and oriented mostly on the viewer who exists outside of the epicentre of events.

Based on the recognition of the distance present between human experience and information that forms our image of it, it opens discussion around endeavour and labour of gathering information, analysing it, on the level of cognition as well as on the level of feelings.

The first Video consists of the footage taken on the Super 8 film during two weeks in Kyiv in April 2023. It documents interaction with the now symbolic objects of “new reality”, embedded from the military environment into the city landscape and merged with the mundane of its citizens.

The choice of material was based on its physicality and capability (due to established associations) to “extract” visual images from the anaesthetizing flow of instant information, undergoing multiple transformations to realize its full potential. Proposing that to be “deciphered” information must be encrypted first.

The anti-tank hedgehog was created from the image taken earlier in Kyiv, and being put in the isolated environment of the gallery space questioned the notions of the context in the work of art (as well as the semantic component of the object itself).

It also developed a relationship with the visual qualities and function of the asterisk symbol. This connection found its expression in the implementation of the text (in the format of video with voiceover), which framed the dialogue between the components of the installation.
