TAVERTINE is the name of a concept I birthed in my final year.

It's concept that became a physical print publication that (to briefly generalise a number of frustrations I had hoped to give myself space to tackle) exists as my response to the ever-growing proliferation of 'content': speed! disposability! the homogenisation of voice! buzzwords! psychobabble! streamlined! SEOable! hot-to-go! micro-this! macro-that!

This, the very first issue, was a thoughtfully curated amalgamation of essays (very short and very long), interviews with the likes of vintage fashion collector Joseph Prevost and bonfide fashion historian Valerie Steele, rankings, reviews and cultural riposte.

My chosen theme was 'Opening Acts & Debuts'.

Final work

A double-page spread of an article titled 'Opening The Curtain Backstage At The Show'

Opening The Curtain Backstage At The Show

This is an article inspired by a great piece on the debut Margiela fashion show in Paris from The Gentlewoman, as recommended by my tutor Tamsin Blanchard.

The approach inspired this piece: a magnifying glass on the backstage of the CSM MA Fashion Show 2025.

A double-page spread of an article titled 'First Things First, Read This...'

First Things First, Read This...

Final year saw me complete my FMP, extended dissertation and tenure as UAL Boom Club president. I called on some names from the book club team to give their expert book reviews and recommendations...

A double-page spread of an article titled 'All The World's A Stage...But Who's Giving The Commentary?'

All The World's A Stage...But Who's Giving The Commentary?

This, for me, was a very exciting back-and-forth between classic critic and historian Valerie Steele and some pioneering new names in fashion commentary including cultural commentator Anastasia Vartanian (@fatannawintour), fashion journalist Ayo Ojo (@fashionroadman), writer Juno Kelly and other fashion lecturers and MA/PhD students.

A double-page spread from an article titled 'The First Cut: Fashion & Debuts'

The First Cut: Fashion & Debuts

A ranking and evaluation of top debuts in fashion: debut fashion shows, graduate shows, debuts of newly appointed head designers/creative directors etc.

Research and process

A slide from a crit exploring concept and research.

A page from a crit -- this was around about the crux of the ideation stage, visual references, articles, current contextual news and other relevant examples annotated.

A page from my visual research document.

A page from my visual research document. A targeted approach to typography-led, monochrome, pared-yet-experimental references was used.
