The Alternative Ways of Seeing

Madeline Kort

Summary

Final work

I am a multi-disciplinary graphic designer whose practice centres on socially engaged design that encourages critical thinking, incites discourse, and promotes social action. My work is often research-led, with a particular interest in design history, and building space for care and creativity.

Through projects like The Alternative Ways of Seeing , I use design not only as a tool for communication but also as a space for critique, reflection, and resistance. I am interested in how publishing, pedagogy, and collaboration can open up alternative ways of knowing—especially when informed by decolonial, feminist, and anti-hegemonic perspectives

The Alternative Ways of Seeing is an interventional educational resource that looks to encourage a critical examination of the canon. It highlights how educational institutions have historically prioritised the canonical works—often to the detriment of representation, innovation, and diverse perspectives. Rooted in historic biases that favour a white, Western, male narrative, the canon leaves many voices underrepresented. This volume asks: Who gets to be seen? And what other ways of seeing exist?

The book is split into two parts. The first uses John Berger’s Ways of Seeing —the most checked-out book at UAL Camberwell Library over the last decade—as a symbol of the canon. While the second introduces ‘alternative ways of seeing,’ positioning Berger’s foundational text in dialogue with more diverse voices which build on and expand his ideas. The aim is to put the two into conversation, showing the value the canon while challenging its limitations, opening space for expansion and new perspectives.

By teaching canonical texts alongside contemporary and diverse authors, educators can broaden the curriculum, inspire critical thinking, and help to foster innovation in design education. This approach supports a more inclusive, pluralistic, and progressive field. Recognising multiple histories, narratives, and ways of seeing instead of one.
