Psalm 1: Reload It

Loretta Yussuff

Summary

Final work

Loretta Yussuff is a British figurative artist of Nigerian-Lithuanian heritage, born and based in Brixton, South London. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her practice fuses instinctive mark-making with the formal rigour of art historical tradition. Her paintings blend realism and expressive abstraction to explore the emotional and philosophical dimensions of the human condition through black figuration. Influenced by artists such as Vermeer, Francis Bacon, and Van Gogh, Yussuff treats painting as a mode of thinking and feeling, where technique becomes theology, and figuration becomes philosophy. Her practice is ultimately an act of reclamation: of painting’s capacity to honour overlooked lives and of the right to explore the universal through one’s own specific, complex self.

Psalm 1: Reload It' is an oil painting on canvas that depicts a livestream of a DJ set on the streets of King’s Cross, celebrating Black masculine joy and expression through music. The work challenges the dominant framing of Black music as “noise” or “public disruption,” instead affirming it as a vital site of creativity, ingenuity, and passion. It forms part of her wider MA project Psalm in the Dark, which draws on the literary structure of the Biblical Psalms to explore universal states of joy, grief, communion, and loneliness through the lens of Black and mixed-Black heritage inner-city London.
