# Project Description Creating a Caring Service for Carers Lewis Baylin Summary Final work I am a service designer and user researcher, currently interning at the LEGO Group. College London College of Communication Course MA Service Design Graduation year 2024 Creating a Caring Service for Carers in Higher Education is a service design project that explores two key opportunities. First, it outlines a proposed service transformation at my current institution, the University of the Arts London. Second, it presents a framework of interventions that can be applied across universities throughout the UK. As a young adult carer myself, I have experienced slipping through various access gaps in education and navigating the multitude of responsibilities that come with being a caregiver in isolation. Throughout my education, I received little support and only reached out for help when I was at a breaking point—a point that, for many student carers, comes too late. Despite my responsibilities, I made the decision to go to university, unaware of the financial, emotional, and educational challenges I would face. Moreover, I wasn’t even conscious of how much my caring role impacted my life, as it had simply become my normality. This project highlights the urgent need for universities to take proactive steps to identify and support young adult carers. The findings reveal a significant gap in awareness among staff and carers, perpetuating a cycle of invisibility and unmet needs. Clear, compassionate policies that protect confidentiality, encourage disclosure, and make support visible and accessible are essential and should be the minimum standard. Confidential disclosure processes and discreet methods of delivering information can help carers seek support without fear of judgment or familial conflict. Targeted financial assistance, such as travel and carer-specific funds, can alleviate the financial strain many carers face, enabling them to focus on their studies. Alongside policy changes, creating opportunities for student carers to connect with one another and appointing dedicated student carer leads will help ensure their full spectrum of needs is recognised and addressed. By adopting these recommendations, universities can create an environment that empowers student carers to thrive both academically and personally. The challenges faced by student carers are hard enough—let’s create an experience that actively seeks them out and supports them. This report provides a roadmap for meaningful change, demonstrating how the right support can help carers reach their full potential in higher education.
