A short experimental film that is based on a collage of memories with different elder women that I have ended up living alone with. I am particularly interested in this relation as it does not belong to either the romantic, friendship or family domain. Instead, it confronts two women divided by a lifetime of experience and are coming to confront themselves, and consequently their mother wounds, in one another. In societies that have lost a close-knit community style of living, exposure to different walks of life has ceased to become a casual part of existence. Yet I believe it to be fundamental in deepening the understanding of self, of which we come to meet through understanding others.

The process of film was rather sporadic, with little rehearsal and due to the nature of 16mm, was made up one-shot takes that rather resembled the rawness of a theatre performance.

Conversations with my Mother

The piece is divided into acts that are based on conversations and gestures that I had with my mother. A shingle beach, a childhood backyard, my mother’s bedroom, a banya, my grandparents kitchen, and again back to the shingle beach. With every act, the conversation grows in language complexity, representing the graduation from nursery rhymes, to lullabies, to distinct words that linger in my psyche to the present day. Coincidentally all these memories are based on the expectation of womanhood, with a lingering assumption to follow the behaviours and wisdom that is passed down generationally. In this performance, I chose to question these assumptions, creating a ritual that was my own and that in the end fell to scattered pieces instead of what was meant to cleanse my body.
