Final work

My name is Laluna Dale-Thomas, I'm a Japanese/Welsh illustrator, currently based in London. Raised in West Wales, my rural upbringing shapes my work and can be seen in its playful and expressive nature. My work highlights diversity in a colourful and vibrant way, inspired by my own experience of growing up in a multicultural environment. Experienced in screen printing, lino, watercolours, fine liner, procreate and ceramics, my dynamism across different medians shapes the experimental nature of my work.

In this project I focused on my upbringing as a mixed race person in West Wales. From interviewing family and other mixed race friends I learned a lot, and ended my project with a recipe book, as food is a big part of cultures, connections and nostalgia. From being brought up in a rural part of Wales, it was amazing to see how my mum managed to introduce her Japanese culture to us, especially through food. It gave us a way to connect with Japan, without being there. I used recipes I collected from other half Japanese people, along with a story about it, as well as recipes of my own that I've been taught from my mum. I created facsimiles of mum's recipe book, as well to make it a mother daughter recipe book, filled with stories, memories and delicious recipes.
