# Project Description PH03NIX Kristy Roche-Winson Summary Final work Science 2019, I've been designing and making footwear, combining creative vision with craftsmanship. My work blends aesthetic innovation and function, inspired by material, culture, and trends. I've developed a strong understanding of the full process, from sketching and prototyping to construction and finishing. Whether it's high-end leather or alternative styles, I'm passionate about creating footwear that people connect with and wear with pride. College London College of Fashion Course BA (Hons) Cordwainers Footwear Graduation year 2025 PHOENIX Rising from the Ruins What if your next step could rewrite a story of waste, neglect, and abandonment? What if walking became a quiet act of rebellion against landfill culture? Phoenix Footwear was born from this very question, an imaginative resurrection of materials once left roadside, forgotten. This final collection is more than footwear; it is a reclamation project of materials, of values, of purpose. Like its mythological namesake, Phoenix represents rebirth. Each shoe emerges from the ashes of the automotive and cycling industries, salvaging soul and steel from the detritus of modern mobility. Concept + Materials Phoenix Footwear utilises discarded car and bicycle parts, transforming them into high-concept, functional fashion. The uppers are crafted from salvaged car seat fabrics — worn leather and patterned textiles that bear the marks of former use. These materials bring durability, character, and a tactile history to each design. The heel structure and reinforced toe incorporate bicycle brake cables and metal components, delivering strength and edge through a surprisingly lightweight construction. These technical inclusions aren’t just practical, they communicate movement, tension, and resilience through form. Design Philosophy A thoughtful balance of ecological responsibility, inventive thinking, visual impact, and real-world relevance guides this collection. Phoenix challenges the traditional footwear narrative by elevating overlooked materials into something purposeful and beautiful. Visually, the designs play with contrast, raw vs. refined, worn vs. reimagined. Stitching is deliberately exposed, textures left asymmetrical, allowing the shoe to tell its own story. Every element serves both aesthetic and environmental intention. Fashion should not only mirror our times but reshape them. Phoenix Footwear is designed to stand at that intersection where storytelling meets sustainability, and where conscious materials meet bold design. This collection advocates for design that works with what already exists, rather than demanding more from the earth. Why It Matters The footwear industry contributes massively to global waste. Phoenix is a counterpoint to a zero-virgin-material model that demonstrates how industrial remnants can be elevated through craft. It’s a proposition that design can be both environmentally responsible and uncompromising in style. By using roadside waste objects associated with motion, journey, and impact, Phoenix redefines what it means to move forward. Each shoe is a vessel of past function, retooled for future relevance. In Closing Phoenix Footwear is not just a collection; it’s a philosophy made tangible. A way to tread lighter without stepping back. These are shoes born from forgotten parts, designed to leave a conscious footprint, thoughtful, inventive, and visually powerful.
