"Is my outfit fashionable enough today?" This seemingly innocent question often shapes our daily choices, yet its roots go deeper than we realize—into the hidden structures of social judgment, algorithmic influence, and consumer culture. Wearing the Rules reveals how these invisible rules shape personal identity in fashion.
This project transforms critical research into three virtual garments and a performance film. Each garment embodies different levels of control, both external and internal. The short film utilizes augmented reality to create a narrative-driven digital fashion experience. This immersive experience critiques the illusion of choice and self-expression in fashion. Meanwhile, it offers thought-provoking perspectives on identity in the physical and digital realms. In conclusion, this project questions the concept of "free" self-expression in fashion and invites viewers to reflect on autonomy, visibility, and identity within a post-human fashion landscape.
Final work
Wearing the Rules
At the beginning of the video, the protagonist opened the closet and took out a piece of clothing. However, after a brief pause, he put the piece of clothing back and replaced it with another. Then, a rule appeared on the screen: Do not wear the same clothes as you did the day before. The scene changes and the protagonist in the mirror is wearing no makeup. After the camera shows Rule 2: Prove your professionalism through makeup. The protagonist's eyes are painted with makeup. The next image is of an iron smoothing out wrinkles in clothing. Rule 3 is revealed as the iron is passed across: Do not wear wrinkles. The scene changed and the protagonist was standing in the middle of an elevator room where people were coming and going. There are many boxes and lines appearing in this space, as if scanning everything in this space. The three rules that appeared before are looming. The protagonist is very embarrassed. A set of virtual AR clothing is pieced together on the protagonist through small squares. This costume is very tight. The silver necklace is in the shape of a shravaka and is tightly wrapped around the neck. The lower body is wrapped in silver leather lines, giving people a sense of restraint. There are many traces of the hem of the skirt being manipulated and held tightly by the hands of those around it. This outfit expresses how people are bound by social rhetoric. Next, the protagonist chooses between a pair of backpacks at home. The protagonist took away the black backpack in the middle. Rule 4 appeared under the backpack: Women must carry backpacks because clothing pockets are small. The camera zooms in on the big-name logo on the bag carried by the protagonist, and then Rule 5 appears around the screen: Show the logo to prove you exist. Rule 6 appears on the door of the building. As the protagonist dressed in black approaches, the door automatically opens, and some words appear inside the door: Wear neutral colors and suppress emotion. The scene changes and the protagonist is standing at the gate where people come and go. There are many boxes and lines in the space again, scanning this space and everything. The world seems to be run by algorithms and rules. Another set of virtual clothes appears on the protagonist's body. This suit of clothing seems to be made of a large number of strips of cloth that look like consumer receipts. The mesh-like object above his head seems to influence the protagonist's thoughts. The six rules mentioned earlier still appear in the space. Next, the protagonist scrolls through social media. The blurry reflection of social media appears on the glass, and on the other side is Rule 7: Do not post the same outfit twice on social media. Later, the protagonist came to the mall and took down a pair of stockings from the stockings shelf. Rule 8 appeared: remove your stockings during an emergency because stockings are flammable. The title Rule 9 appeared next to the model as the protagonist walked through the mall. The camera focuses on a row of models in the mall. After zooming in, Rule 9 appears: Do not fit the body; reshape it thinner. The above nine rules all appear in different ways. The protagonist is very anxious and nervous standing in a space full of rules and algorithms. The last set of virtual clothes also appeared. The suit is made up of many layers of fabric. The multi-layered collar around the waist feels like a reptile shedding its skin. Heavy, multi-layered sleeves weighed down the hero's hands. This outfit expresses the stress and waste caused by overconsumption. Then, three sets of virtual clothes appeared on the screen. The red boxes and straight lines that symbolize surveillance and restraint are very dazzling in the black and white picture. The protagonists wearing different virtual costumes are repeatedly stacked on the screen as if out of order. The background music also becomes fast and urgent. A glitch begins to appear on the screen. Finally, the screen went black, and the title of this work - Wearing the Rules - appeared in the middle of the screen. Finally, the screen shows the names of the producers.
