This project began as an investigation into encoding and decoding and the unlocking of ancient messages. Initial experiments included the encryption of the Baconian motto, ‘Knowledge is Power’ in letterpress and needlecraft, in Rosetta Stone-inspired triplets of ciphers and codes. I explored the use of crochet to send a digital message, where each square ‘pixel’ is binary: either it is filled, or it is a gap, viz., it is either a 1 or a 0. Stitching these concepts together in a textile translation of a biblical text, I invite a reader to decrypt the text(ile) using a key to unlock the message.

Final work

Crochet Koine Greek on a table
English-Koine Greek translation
Crop of Koine Greek Crochet

Research and process

Hand-crocheting Koine Greek typography
Pencil pixellation of John 1:1-5
