Final work

Katie Zhang is a cross-disciplinary designer and image researcher currently based in London. Her practice explores how images reshape the viewer’s experience of time and space through compositional framing, spatial intervention, and structural storytelling. By treating both video and book not just as mediums but as spatial and temporal devices, she reimagines how perception can be organized, disrupted, and reconstructed.

Threading, Drifting and Sensing is a practice-based project centered on the question: In what ways can video and book reshape the structure of images so that viewers experience time and space differently, and reframe their experience of seeing?

I employ both video and book as mediums of experimentation. Time is no longer a backdrop for video, nor space a passive stage for paper. Both become elements to be seen, shaped, and reorganized—like images. Video and paper offer parallel paths to explore temporal and spatial experience. I approach video through ‘time’—using slicing, reversing, and speed manipulation to disrupt continuity and recompose the viewer’s sense of duration. I approach book through ‘space’—using cutting, layering, and controlled opacity to create spatial structures that unfold as temporal experiences.
