# Project Description No Longer Us Jun Shya Summary Final work In a world where every step feels preordained and each smile rehearsed, Jun explores the haunting beauty of a scripted life, where the figures in her paintings wear masks to perform different versions of themselves. Shifting between abstraction and representation through a diverse range of painterly techniques and dynamic compositions, she focuses on concealing parts of the face and body to symbolise the various roles we play in different settings. By incorporating textural materials such as beeswax, sand, and crackle paste, Jun mimics the materiality of collage to create paintings that question the authenticity of the self and the world we inhabit. Intrigued by the process of unbalancing composition through distinct colours, crackled textures, and seemingly incongruous references, this series of paintings explores the theme of reality versus illusion in relation to the coexistence of present and past. By capturing the intimate gesture of push and pull in a ballet performance, each dancer becomes a version of another. It reflects the idea that a different version of you exists in the mind of everyone who knows you. Curious images emerge through a process of patient layering and excavation. Parts of the human body and face are either left blank or slightly concealed, yet we, as viewers, are still able to make sense of them.
