Survivors and martyrs of colonialism, the Maroons from the Americas shielded seeds within their canerows to sow for sustenance and cultural preservation. Joshua's collection harvests these traditions by memorialising ephemeral Black hair practices. His jewellery ornamentally venerates the body, not only embedding historical reference to the seeds but honouring Blackness against its longstanding dehumanisation. As an embodied extension of the transcendent potentiality of Black art, Joshua's work goes against the grain of neocolonialism.
