# Project Description The Pluriversal Palette Jiabao Wen Summary Final work College London College of Communication Course MA Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures Graduation year 2025 The Pluriversal Palette – Decolonising Colour Theory expands the discussion of colour beyond aesthetics to its social and political dimensions. Colour is understood as a medium that carries identity, memory, and emotion, yet is often governed by systems rooted in colonial thinking that claim universality while silencing difference. The project proposes a decolonial reframing of colour—not as a neutral or universal code, but as a living, relational practice shaped by context and experience. It invites viewers to reconsider what it means to “see” colour when stripped of imposed standards, and to imagine a world where chromatic diversity reflects cultural coexistence rather than hierarchy. The Pluriversal Palette envisions colour as a shared ground for empathy, care, and collective redefinition. It’s a memory that reminds me my dog can feel my presence simply through the soft whiff of my happiness when we’re together. It was created by merging the green of the grass brushed by my dog’s soft fur with the golden light reflecting from the sunflowers. The Decolonial Colour Matrix - Infinite possibilities It comes from the universe - every being, human and creature, tree and river, from earth and mother nature and the creation of life. My relationship to it is also your relationship to it. Its a our relationship. From many weird and wonders of life: Love, sadness, winter, spring, growth, power, Negativity and positivity. Cause and reaction. Energy, calm and enthusiastic. The Decolonial Colour Matrix - Heat Wave The colour ingredient comes from the fire-red of chilli peppers and the earthy warmth of Sichuan peppers, their aroma rising like a familiar hum in the kitchen air. They belong to my hometown—small, bright, and alive. When I crush them together in a mortar, the sharp heat and gentle numbness mingle, reminding me of the balance between strength and tenderness I grew up with. I ground them slowly, feeling their warmth travel into my palms. The colour that forms is a deep, glowing red—one that tastes of memory, and speaks in the language of home.
